LIBRARY HIGHLIGHTS

Abbot Public Library is pleased to announce we will be opening at the Eveleth School interim space at 3 Brook Road, Marblehead on Monday, October 17. Our hours will be the same as they were at Pleasant Street:

Monday: 9:30 am - 8:00 pm

Tuesday: 9:30 am – 6:00 pm

Wednesday: 9:30 am - 8:00 pm

Thursday: 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Friday: 9:30 am - 5:00 pm

Saturday: 9:30 am - 5:00 pm

Sunday: Closed

Repurposing the classrooms and gym space at the school, the interim space includes more than 40% of the library’s collections, rooms dedicated to reference and technical support, children, and teens, as well as quiet reading areas and a room for public programs, which will resume in November. Browsing, book returns, and computers will be available after the library reopens.

“We accomplished a lot during the last five weeks and we are grateful to all of the people who contributed to the transformation of the Eveleth School into a gem of a library as we moved thousands of books, shelving, furniture, computers, and art to the space. We are so happy to welcome everyone back to the library,” said Kimberly Grad, Director of Abbot Public Library.

Renovations at 235 Pleasant Street are scheduled to begin in December 2022 with a projected completion date of Spring 2024. For updates on the renovations, please visit abbotlibrary.org/news/renovation-news.

Poetry Salon with Claire Keyes Featuring the Work of Seamus Heaney

Program Room, Abbot Public Library at Eveleth School and Online via Zoom

To attend via Zoom, please register in advance for this meeting here: tinyurl.com/Nov-2022-Poetry-Salon

The Poetry Salon at Abbot Public Library begins a new season on Thursday, November 17 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm at the library’s interim location, the Eveleth School, 3 Brook Road, Marblehead. This season’s focus will be on poets who have won major prizes, either the Nobel or the Pulitzer.

The November poet is Seamus Heaney, winner of many awards including the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995. Heaney was an Irish poet, playwright, and translator, described by Robert Lowell as “the most important Irish poet since Yeats.” Heaney was a professor at Harvard from 1981 to 1997, and its Poet in Residence from 1988 to 2006. During this time, he gave a reading at Salem State and visited Marblehead, where he sampled the food and drink at Maddi’s. Since Heaney was born and educated in Northern Ireland and lived during the “Troubles,” his poetry reflects some of the issues of a society divided along religious and political lines. At the same time, his poetry can be deeply personal and reflective.

Please join Claire Keyes, Professor Emerita at Salem State University, for an in-depth discussion of Heaney’s poems either in person or via Zoom. To attend via Zoom, please register in advance for this meeting here: tinyurl.com/Nov-2022-Poetry-Salon. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Poetry packets will be available near the library’s Main Desk or online at abbotlibrary.org.
