Boys Varsity Soccer Ends Season 9-7-3

The Marblehead High School Boys soccer team played its final match on November 5, 2022, in the first round of state-wide playoffs, losing 4-0 at the hands of the Falmouth Clippers. The team traveled more than 80 miles to compete but was ultimately unable to find the net and seal their spot in the next round. Despite this loss, Marblehead had a great season overall, finishing 9-7-3, a winning record that is a testament to the team’s strength, especially given the talented teams they faced. 

In their last game before playoffs, Marblehead played without several important contributors who had been injured and lost 1-0 against a strong Swampscott team. Four days earlier, they had prevailed over Masconomet Regional High School (Masco) in a 1-0 victory with the lone goal scored by senior captain Isaiah Piña. Masco, which is ranked 21st in Massachusetts, put up a strong fight, but Marblehead held its ground and added another victory to its record. 

On October 21, Marblehead lined up against Bishop Fenwick, a team they had beaten during their first game of the season. They were not able to replicate their past success, however, drawing Bishop Fenwick 2-2. Marblehead’s goals were scored by sophomores Luke Miller and Stefan Shepard, the latter of whom registered his first varsity goal. Just one day earlier, Marblehead lost 2-4 against a very strong Peabody team. Peabody had beaten Marblehead earlier in the season in a 2-6 loss. This game’s goals were scored by Piña and sophomore Matt Sherf.

On October 18, in their second matchup against Gloucester, Marblehead prevailed 2-1. Gloucester had won the previous game by 4-1, but Marblehead was able to fight back during the rematch on their home turf and secure another 2 points. The goals were scored by Sherf and freshman London McDonald. The night before, Marblehead faced Winthrop. This match was Marblehead’s senior night when all of the senior players are honored, and the Magicians won by a resounding 5-0. Goals were scored by senior captain Harrison Curtis, who found the back of the net just seconds after kickoff, as well as by Piña, who scored twice, Sherf, and freshman Collin White, who scored his first career varsity goal. 

On October 15, Marblehead faced Manchester Essex early on a Saturday morning. The Magicians prevailed, scoring three times and preventing Manchester from scoring even one. This game’s goals were scored by senior captain Sebby Pantzer, McDonald, and Miller. Marblehead faced a very physical Danvers side on October 12, a game during which many players suffered injuries. The physicality did not stop the Magicians, however, who were able to win 1-0 with Sherf scoring their lone goal. 

The Magicians, while unfortunately not progressing further than the first round of the playoffs, had a phenomenal season during which they defeated many division giants and even some teams in divisions higher than their own. Congratulations on a great season.
