Marblehead High School Fall Athletics Season Over

Following the Marblehead High School (MHS) football team’s loss to Milton in the second round of the playoffs, the fall season of sports is officially over. Every single team that competed this season reached the playoffs, with the boys cross country team winning the Massachusetts Division 1C state title. 

Boys Soccer

The varsity boys soccer team reached the playoffs with a record of nine wins, six losses, and three ties. On November 5, 2022, they competed against the Falmouth Clippers, ultimately failing to find the back of the net and conceding four goals, thereby ending their post-season run. The team had a strong season, prevailing over several competitive squads including Masconomet High School (Masco), Gloucester High School, and Danvers High School. 

Girls Soccer

The varsity girls soccer team reached the playoffs with a similar record to the boys team: nine wins, four losses, and five ties. Per the scoring guidelines, which award two points to the victorious team or one point each in the event of a tie, the team finished its regular season with 23 points. This winning record allowed the team to progress into playoffs, where they, unfortunately, lost in the first round in a 2-1 defeat against Stoughton High School. 

Boys Cross Country

The boys cross-country team, the best-performing group in the fall athletic season, finished first in the Division 1C cross-country state qualifying meets. Marblehead was the only team on the North Shore to achieve this first-place title despite the plethora of towns vying for the spot across several divisions. Many athletes put on stellar performances, including senior Ryan Thompson who finished in eighth place, junior Isaac Gross who finished in ninth, senior Harrison Kee who took the 12th spot, and senior David DiCostanzo who finished 20th. The team, under the leadership of Coach Brian Heenan, was able to reach an impressive milestone and bring home a trophy. 

Girls Cross Country

The girls cross-country team also closed out its season in a positive way, finishing ninth in Division 1C. Four athletes stood out, placing within the top 100: freshman O'Connell, who was the highest-ranking Marbleheader across both teams, placed second, junior Cat Piper finished in 68th, senior Isabelle Harvey finished in 82nd, and freshman Angie Fischer took the 97th spot. Marblehead was once again the highest-ranking team locally, with the closest competitor–Masco–reaching just 14th place. 

Girls Field Hockey

Girls field hockey ended their season with a record of four wins, 11 losses, and two ties, allowing the team to proceed to the playoffs. There, they competed against Longmeadow in a matchup that ended in a 5-0 defeat for Marblehead. The team faced many strong challengers over the season, including Masco and Beverly, both of whom prevailed over the Magicians in their meetups. With that said, Marblehead emerged victorious against Peabody twice, and against Malden Catholic and Saugus. 

Girls Volleyball

The girls volleyball team ended its season in an exciting matchup against Nashoba Regional. The game was extremely close, coming down to the final set, which Marblehead lost 10-15. The team played very well over the course of the regular season, winning all but three of their matches for a record of 15-3. Several players stood out on the team, with senior captain Keira Sweetnam reaching 500 career kills during her final season and receiving the Northeastern Conference Player of the Year award for the second year in a row. She, along with senior Isabel Wabno, was selected for the first All-Conference team, with their teammates, senior libero Caitlin Parkman and senior captain Julia Potvin both being selected for the second All-Conference team. 

Girls Powderpuff

The longstanding Marblehead-Swampscott rivalry continued on November 19th during this year’s powderpuff game. An annual tradition, the game takes place between senior girls from Marblehead and Swampscott each year, with the competition occurring at Swampscott’s Blocksidge field. Swampscott ultimately emerged victorious, scoring 21 points to Marblehead’s 13. Seniors Cate Honos and Nev Koughan scored the team’s touchdowns, with Stella Monaco kicking the team’s lone field goal. The Magicians, looking to score the necessary eight points in the form of a touchdown and two-point conversion to tie the game, were cut short by the referee’s whistle.
